NATIONAL GYMNASTICS AWARD PROGRAMME

The National Gymnastics Awards Programme is designed to provide a comprehensive structured and progressive learning system for the teaching of artistic gymnastics in clubs. We are passionate about gymnastics and all the ways it enhances lives. This system is for everyone and is designed to try and help keep kids in sport for as long as possible, whatever their level.

This programme has been produced by experienced gymnastics coaches and seeks to prepare children for fundamental skills and elements right from the start of their gymnastics learning up to FIG four piece competition. The coaching programme consists of three schemes that guide the gymnasts through the various stages of learning on different apparatus and rewards their efforts at strategic intervals with professionally designed awards. It is designed to encourage participation in and continuation of the sport through the use of clear goals and objectives and helps clubs give structure for their coaches while offering something different for their participants.

The Early Years Scheme training book contains two levels – Little Gem and Junior Gem. It is focussed on basic skills, coordination of movement and becoming used to the gymnastics environment. Each level has eight different sections for the early years gymnast to experience and achieve. It is available for boys and girls and also involves some assisted work with adults.

Little Gem has theme based learning. There are eight different theme sheets with ideas of how to make movements fun and imaginative. Each theme has ten movements to be assessed to pass the level. The scheme can be assessed by observation in the sessions or by testing whichever feels most appropriate or suited to your club.

Junior Gem has eight sections (levels 1-8) with twelve moves in each – needing ten out of twelve to pass a level.

Both levels have fun medals to collect for each section completed.

Little Gem and Junior Gem share a joint training book so early years can progress through before starting on the Standard Scheme. The coaching guide also shows the elements for both levels in one book.

The Standard Scheme training book contains four different levels – Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby and Diamond. Each level has eight different sections the gymnast needs to work on to complete an entire level. It is available to both girls and boys doing general gymnastics.

Each of the eight sections has 12 elements to complete – needing 10 out of 12 to pass a level, although the ideal is all 12. This means each of the four levels consists of 96 skills, forming a comprehensive learning programme for gymnasts and coaches.

As each of the sections of a level is completed, the book is marked by the coach with the official stamp and a medal is awarded to the gymnast. Medals are available as ‘boy’ gymnasts or as ‘girl’ gymnasts. Every design is different for every section and level. Also available are medal displays to show off the collection for each of the levels.

At the end of an entire level where all eight sections have been completed, a certificate and T shirt are available to mark the achievement.

The Advanced Scheme training book contains three levels which consists of the Diamond level from the Standard Scheme and an additional two levels – Blue Diamond and Pink Star Diamond. Each level has eight different sections the gymnast needs to work on to complete an entire level. The two additional levels are available for women’s artistic gymnasts only.

Each section has 12 elements to complete – needing 10 out of 12 to pass a level. This scheme has a number of challenging skills which can achieved and acknowledged in the gym without the need to compete the skills in a competition environment.

As each of the eight sections of a level is completed, the book is marked by the coach with the official stamp and a medal is awarded to the gymnast. At the end of an entire level where all eight sections have been completed a certificate and T shirt are available to mark the achievement.
